Preparing Your “Punny Valentines” Activity

  1. Download the Punny Valentines Activity.
  2. Print out the cards and word strips and cut them out along the dotted lines.
  3. Place the cards in a pile and scatter the word strips on the table with the words facing up.
  4. Let’s get punny!

Get “Punny” with Valentines

Have your child choose a valentine card from the pile and find the word that completes the pun. Be sure to remind him that he can look at the illustration on the card for a clue. But if you need some extra help, you can check the answer key!

When your child has found the correct word to complete the pun, have him glue the word strip on the space provided.

Continue matching cards with words strips until all the puns have been created.

Now that you’ve matched all the puns, you can pick the perfect puns to share with your friends!

More Ways to Play

Create your own. Using the template on page 8, encourage your child to create and illustrate his very own valentine puns.

Decrease the difficulty level. For easier matching, cut out one sheet of cards and their corresponding word strips at a time.

Discuss puns. A pun is a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings. Go over the finished cards and discuss each one. Does the pasted word sound like another word? Which one? Encourage your child to imagine the silly scenarios that would be created if each pun were taken literally! Puns are a great form of word play…have fun!
