The Best of 2016: Blog Wrap-Up

Thanks to YOU, it’s been another amazing year here at All About Learning Press!

Simply put, we love serving you. Your enthusiasm for All About Reading and All About Spelling fuels our excitement for the mission of AALP—helping children learn to read and spell.

Every year I hear from hundreds of moms and dads. Some come seeking help for a struggling learner, while many others come to share their children’s success stories. Interaction with our readers is always such a source of encouragement for me and my whole team. The testimonials you share with us via email, Facebook, Instagram, and right here on our blog make our day. Seriously. We LOVE hearing from you.

Here Are a Few of My Favorite Testimonials from 2016

One grateful mom shared her thoughts about how All About Spelling has transformed her daughter from a struggling speller into a spelling lover!

My nine-year-old daughter has been a horrible speller from day one. She loved public school until second grade when she was constantly told she was just making the cutoff for the benchmarks. We decided to homeschool and the joy of learning returnedexcept for spelling. I tried a few different programs to no avail. My friend suggested All About Spelling, and last week, in desperation, I dove in and started at the very beginning.

Today I asked my daughter what subject she wanted to start with. With a big grin, she said “spelling.” After picking myself up off the floor, we breezed through three lessons. We are hooked! FINALLY, a spelling method that works with my daughter’s thought processes.” – Kathy

A grateful couple shared a wonderful testimony about the difference AAR has made for their autistic son.

We wanted to share the GREAT news! Today our son COMPLETED AAR Level 1! It took him a little over a year, but he finally did it! He is becoming more confident and his self-esteem is rising! This is a major deal to us because our son is autistic. The public school we took him out of gave up on him, but we knew AAR would help him! Thank you from the depths of our hearts for this amazing program!” – Dave and Teri H.

And we received this heartfelt message not long ago on our blog:

I am thankful I found your website. I have been a reader for some time now and find the resources are helpful, relevant, and age appropriate. Thank you for all of your hard work!” — Amber

Of course, creating top-notch reading and spelling programs is a huge part of what we do here at AALP, but Amber’s message highlights another important aspect of our mission. I want parents to have all the tools they need to teach their children to read and spell. So here on our blog, we publish informative articles, picture book reviews, and reading and spelling activities for children of all ages and abilities—all designed to help you help your kids.

It’s been a great year on our blog, but of all the posts we published in 2016, a few stand out as favorites!

Rebekah

says:

Unfortunately, spelling is still my son’s least favorite subject even though he has been using AAS for over a year and likes it better than the spelling program we used previously. It’s funny though, he’s a really good speller lately. I pointed that out to him, and he tried not to smile as he shrugged and said he still hated spelling. (Sigh) Hey, he’s still learning whether he enjoys it or not. I am interested in how my daughter will like it when she gets old enough for spelling. I know I’m hooked.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Rebekah,
It is understandable for spelling to not be a favored subject even when a student is doing well with it. If it is something he has struggled with, he probably has to work hard to do as well as he is now. Most people don’t find hard work their favorite thing. The fact that he is becoming a good speller is what is important!

Jenny

says:

We have found an iPad app to use instead of the letter tiles and magnet board. My son doesn’t like moving the tiles around and complains that his arms get tired, but he doesn’t mind doing it on the iPad. I’m looking forward to the letter tiles app from All About Learning, but for now, this one is working well. It’s called Sound Literacy. It’s very customizable, so I was able to change the tile colors and make it look similar to the real tiles. Anyway, it’s a great alternative for those kids who don’t enjoy using the tiles, or for using while traveling, or if you just don’t have space for a magnet board. :)

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Thank you for the review of Sound Literacy, Jenny. It is a good alternative, although it is limited to iPad only. There is a similar program, Whizzimo, that works through a computer browser, for those that don’t have iPads.

However, we are working on a letter tile app and will announce it everywhere when it is ready.

Amy

I have a struggling reader. I’m interested in All About Reading to help him.

We are loving All About Spelling! My 7-year-old daughter is working above level in every area – except spelling. She somehow missed the spelling gene, and is way behind her peers. This year I researched for a long time and decided to try this, and it is working! We started back at level one, in hopes of helping her get the basics, and I’m very glad we did. It has been a great foundation. She is finally hearing the individual sounds in words, and is able to transcribe those sounds on paper, both totally new skills for her! Now that she’s conquered that concept, she is flying through the rest of the lessons. On top of being very effective so far, she and my 5-year-old son both love doing the lessons, they think it is so much fun.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Sally,
Thank you for sharing your daughter’s spelling struggles and now successes with us. It is surprising, but some children do need to be taught to hear the individual sounds in words. It is a foundational skill, and once learned makes a huge difference in spelling ability.

Holly
