How We Make Reading and Spelling Easy to Teach

I know you’ve got a lot to do in a day! And teaching reading and spelling should be one of the easier things on your list. That’s why our programs are designed to help you teach your children in the most efficient, effective way possible, with no fluff and no gaps.

With All About Reading and All About Spelling, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never taught reading or spelling before. The teacher’s manuals walk you through each step—with no previous experience and no special training necessary. You’ll be teaching like an expert from your very first lesson.

What Makes Our Programs Easy to Teach?

  1. Open-and-Go Lesson Plans

All About Reading and All About Spelling were designed to be easy to teach right out of the box. I’ve done all the research and prep work so you can devote your time to teaching your child. Gently scripted lesson plans ensure that you’ll know exactly how to teach every single lesson with no preparation required.

  3. Adjustable, Mastery-based Pace

Our programs make it easy to adjust the pace of your instruction to suit your child’s developmental level and attention span. Both programs are mastery-based rather than grade-level-based, so students are placed in the program according to ability rather than age or grade level.

Mastery-based instruction plays a huge role in your success as a teacher. Since you aren’t restricted by grade levels, you can place your child in the level he needs. Your child moves on to the next level only after he has mastered the content in the previous level.

Contrast this with a grade-level program, where a child moves on to the next grade level regardless of whether the previous material has been mastered. This can set up a miserable cycle of defeat and frustration.

Can you see how mastery-based instruction allows your child to be successful as he grows in confidence and ability?

  4. One Concept at a Time

Our lessons teach just one new concept at a time. This respects your child’s funnel—the amount of information your child’s mind can assimilate and put into long-term memory at one time. Overloading your child’s funnel only leads to failed lessons and wasted time, so we avoid that.

  5. Teach for 20 Minutes per Day

We recommend teaching for 20 minutes a day. When the timer goes off, wrap it up for the day and place your bookmark in the teacher’s manual. Pick up there tomorrow. A lesson may take one day or two weeks, depending upon your child. That’s pretty freeing for Mom, isn’t it?

  6. Motivating Activities

Kids are motivated by the wide variety of activities, so there’s no more dragging your child through the lessons.

  8. Focused On the “Why”

Our approach to teaching reading and spelling focuses on the logic of language. Instruction focuses on the rules, patterns, and concepts that teach children how to read and spell, so instead of relying on memorization, you’ll be helping your child understand how the English language actually works. Understanding the “whys” behind reading and spelling takes away the guessing that makes language so difficult for so many children and adults.

  9. Support for the Teacher

Unlike many other Orton-Gillingham or Spalding-inspired programs, our program was written with the student and teacher in mind. Everything is clear and laid out just how you need it. There is no flipping back and forth between resources, no puzzling over instructions, and no confusion. You’ll know exactly what and how to teach.

With our programs, you’re never on your own. In addition to offering expert “Tips for the Teacher” within lessons, I am committed to providing you with all the help you need every step of the way. If you need help, just email us or give us a call!

With All About Reading and All About Spelling, you can teach your children with confidence. We’re so sure you’ll be happy, that we guarantee it. After all, “When mom isn’t happy, nobody’s happy!”

Which of these easy-to-teach features would make you the happiest?

I am a Grade 4 -7 English teacher I was not trained to teach since I had a teaching and library qualification it was always my desire
to teach leaners to read and write but, I have those that are struggling to an extent of having a negative attitude to the whole thing. How can you help me to instill the reading and spelling desire to these children .

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Babalwa,
Often students resist learning to read and spell and have negative attitudes because they have had so little success with it over long periods of time. It is understandable for people to want to avoid tasks that they have failed at again and again!

In such situations, it is because to start at the beginning and build up from there. It ensures that students are starting from a place of success, to build confidence, plus it ensures that you fill any gaps in knowledge and skill that they may have that is keeping them from succeeding at higher levels. See our “No Gaps” Approach to Reading and Spelling.

Babalwa

says:

What can you recommend for my 19 year old son who stopat Grade 6 due to
ADHD. I am in south Africa eastern Cape.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Babalwa,
I would recommend working with your son with All About Spelling and with having him read aloud to you every day for about 20 to 30 minutes. All About Spelling will fill any gaps in language skills and knowledge he may have, and the reading aloud to you will provide the practice with reading necessary for reading to improve.

As he reads aloud to you, require him to read accurately and help him to sound out words as needed. It is preferable for him to read aloud from books that are somewhat easy for him than to read from books that are too hard.

Lastly, there is a retailer in South Africa that carries All About Spelling. Check out The Book Connection!

Stephanie Paul

says:

I have done a lot of research. This program sounds like it could help my child that finds spelling difficult.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Stephanie,
Do you have any specific questions or concerns?

Here are some ways that All About Spelling can help kids that have struggled with spelling:

– Each lesson time is simple and explicit and will include 3 simple steps: the review of what was learned the day before, a simple new teaching, and a short practice of that new teaching.

– Incremental lessons. All About Spelling breaks every teaching down into its most basic steps and then teaches the lessons in a logical order, carrying students from one concept or skill to the next. Each step builds on what the student has already mastered.

– AAS is multisensory. Research has shown that when a child is taught through all three pathways at the same time, a method known as simultaneous multisensory instruction, he will learn significantly more than when taught only through his strongest pathway.

– AAS uses specially color-coded letter tiles. Working with the letter tiles can make the difference between understanding or not understanding a concept.

– AAS is scripted so you can concentrate on your child. The script is very clear, without excess verbiage.

– AAS has built-in review in every lesson. Students that struggle generally need lots of review in order to retain concepts. With AAS, your child will have a Review Box so you can customize the review. This way, you can concentrate on just the things that your child needs help with, with no time wasted on reviewing things that your child already knows.

– All About Spelling has a gradual progression for increasing the student’s stamina and fluency in writing, from words and short phrases in Level 1, to phrases and short sentences in Level 2, to 12 dictation sentences per step in Level 3. Partway through Level 3, the Writing Station activity is introduced. In this exercise, students write sentences of their own that they make up using some of their spelling words. In this way students have begun to use words in a more real-world context through dictation and writing, to help them transition to longer writing assignments.

All About Spelling has a one-year “Go Ahead and Use It” guarantee. You can try it, and if for any reason you feel that it isn’t the right match for your child, return it for a full refund of the purchase price, excluding shipping.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if you have further questions, need help with placement, or anything else.
