“Swatting Phonograms” – A Fun Phonogram Activity

Looking for a fun way to review phonograms? “Swatting Phonograms” is a fantastic hands-on activity that your child will love! It’s fast paced, engaging … and just a little bit gross. Perfect!

Instructions for “Swatting Phonograms”

  1. Download and print the swatter and bug cards.
  2. Cut out and assemble the swatter and laminate for added durability.
  3. Cut out the phonogram cards for the level you wish to play.
  4. Start swatting phonograms!

Playing “Swatting Phonograms”

Arrange a selection of bug phonograms on the floor or table. (This might be the only time you don’t mind having bugs on your kitchen table!) Be sure to select only the phonograms that your child has learned.

Say the name and/or sound of a phonogram and have your child find the phonogram and “swat” it with the swatter.

Keep going until all the phonograms have been swatted. Repeat any phonograms that your child had trouble with.

More Fun with Your Swatter

There is no limit to the fun that you can have with your swatter. Here are three more ideas:

  1. Scatter your bug cards around the room. Say the names and let your child run around the room to find and swat the phonograms. Turn up the fun a notch by timing each attempt!
  2. Reverse roles. Let your child take a turn at dictating the names or the sounds of the phonogram cards while you swat them.
  3. Need to review word cards instead of phonograms? Play the game with a selection of word cards from your child’s reading or spelling review box.

Can you think of more fun ways to use your swatter? Leave a comment!

My kids loved this and learned much quicker than just flash cards

Erica,
Yes, such a great point! All About Reading’s and All About Spelling’s flashcards are much more about tracking mastery. They do not have to be used as flashcards are traditionally used. In fact, we recommend all sorts of fun ways to review in our 12 Great Ways to Review Reading Word Cards and 10 Great Ways to Review Spelling Word Cards blog posts!

My kids love all these games. I laminate and use expo markers to write and erase the words/phrases or letters to be practiced.

Robin

Jessica,
Wonderful tip! Laminating and using dry-erase markers is great for making activities reusable again and again. Thanks!

We have been using AAR this year for my 7 year old daughter. We have implemented this game with her word cards. She loves using her swatter! We then switch turns, so she can call words to me because she loves me (mom) to play too. Which is a win-win in my book!

Robin

says: Customer Service

What a great way to play, Ashley! I love that she wants you to swat the cards as well. Thank you for sharing this idea to make this game more social!

Wendy,
Oh, yes! This would be so much fun as a go-along for a unit study on bugs!

And, another great add-on for a unit study on bugs will be our Snug as a Bug review book that is set to release later this year! It will be like our Birds of a Feather and Something Fishy review books that are designed to be used with any level of All About Reading and All About Spelling. Sign up for our email newsletter to be sure to be alerted when the Snug as a Bug review book is released!

Glenda

My grandson absolutely loved this activity. I have used it for additional reading activities, since. He has severe dyslexia, but is now an early reader. Unlike the usual charistic attributed to children with dyslexia (that they will never ENJOY reading), he LOVES reading! He reads everything in sight. I attribute his ability and love of reading to THIS AMAZING PROGRAM.
I can’t Thank You enough for offering it.
Forever grateful,
Glenda

Robin

Oh, it is a great activity for practicing letters and even numbers! (The download includes a sheet of blank bugs, so you could write numbers on them.)
