In honor of moms everywhere, we have a special downloadable activity sheet today: “Baby Animal Names!”
When I was growing up, I was always enchanted by the special bond between animal moms and their babies. I was also delighted to learn that there are special names for many animal babies.
Did you know that a baby platypus is called a puggle? Or that a baby grouse is called a cheeper? Such fun words!
In this free downloadable activity, you and your child will match animal babies with their mommas. At the same time, your child will become familiar with names for baby animals that she may not have heard before. This exposure will help build your child’s vocabulary, thereby increasing her reading comprehension.
It’s a simple activity. First have your child cut out the animal cards and the Mother and Baby labels.
Place each card in the appropriate “Mother” or “Baby” group.
Then help the baby animals find their mommas. You can help your child build her vocabulary by reading and discussing the words together as she finds each match.
This matching activity is an example of the kind of vocabulary-building exercise that you’ll find in All About Reading.
“Baby Animal Names” is adapted from an activity included in All About Reading Level 4, Lesson 17. Download this lesson to see how we use activities to reinforce reading skills throughout the program.
Is your child hooked on learning baby animal names? Here are a few more word pairs you can use.
What are your or your child’s favorite baby animal names? Share in the comments below!

says:Any marsupial baby is called a joey–these include: kangaroos, wombats, koalas, wallaroos, opossums, sloths, Tasmanian Devils, and other lesser known ones. (I think there are almost 100 species of marsupials in America and almost 240 in Australia.)
Robin E.
says: Customer ServiceGood to know, Kara! What a fun fact, as it would lead directly into a discussion as to what makes a mammal a marsupial. Lots of learning!

says:What fun! I’m actually thinking I’m going to use this as an activity for my oldest (who’s 8) and my youngest (who’s 3) to do together while I do schoolwork with the middle one. She loves to help him learn things, and she’s an excellent little mama. Thanks for the extra activity!

Julie W
says:It has been a rough week here. Sunday my boy spiked a fever and started with a nasty cold. Monday we put in paperwork to buy a house. Tuesday my husband was summoned for National Guard Duty in the middle of nowhere, leaving me in charge of house negotiations (no pressure!) Wednesday I came down with the dreaded cold.
The kids have watched way too much television this week, so I think we will spend Mothers Day doing a lot of quiet, screen free activities together. My voice is too sore to do read alouds, so this matching activity will be perfect! Hubby might be able to call tonight, which would be an awesome Mothers Day Gift!
Robin E. at All About Learning Press
says:Julie,
Oh, hugs! What a stressful week for you. Thirteen years of homeschooling (my oldest graduates in just one month!), has taught me that sometimes the ups and downs of life is the lesson. It all works out.
I hope you got your phone call, and I pray that everything works together for you to have a lovely week.
