We have created a nook using an old pack and play. We cut out one small side of the netting. They can crawl in with a blanket and pillow and a pile of books. You can even cover the top with a crib sheet to make a “tent”.

What a great idea! Everyone loves a blanket fort, and this makes it especially easy and cozy! Thank you for sharing this.

Stephanie

A cozy nook definitely encouraged our youngest to increase independent reading! After moving our Christmas tree in January and before we could move the furniture, she claimed the vacant spot with a blanket and an armload of books. Thanks for the list of chapter books! What a great resource!

I love that your child made her own cozy reading nook, Stephanie! That makes it all the more personal and therefore more likely to get used often.

Very inspiring! Even a basket with books switched out every week or so would be inviting!!!

I’ve been contemplating a nook of some kind for my 5yo daughter in her bedroom, but so many of the fun, comfy chairs/beanbags are made with toxic materials. Wish I could find an affordable, natural option.

My daughter’s bed, and my son’s rocking chair are our go-to spots for reading and snuggling!

You’re welcome, Jennie!

Sarah

We created a reading nook under our stairs. I made a giant cushion and some pillows. We built in shelves for books that are being read right now, on our to read list and some favorites. It is such a comfortable place to read and it has become a family favorite place to be. We are so glad we made an awkward space into something that is functional, cozy, and encourages more reading!

Robin E.

I love the idea of making an underutilized space become such a cherished space for your family! Great idea, Sarah!

Zorah F

says:

Yes, we have a reading nook at home with a growing collection of children’s best loved stories. I also put a small CD player to play audio version of the books while kids read along. It has encouraged my kids to read and love reading.

I love the idea of adding a device for audiobooks as well to your reading nook, Zorah! Thanks for sharing it. ?

I love the idea of a reading nook, what a great way to create a reader. My favorite is the vintage bed on the porch, adorable!!

Brittany

says:

I am so looking forward to creating something more enjoyable and personalized for each kiddo in a specific area. We have a general area with bookshelves but a small basket and some personalized colors and fun pillows in an enjoyable corner of their room might create the perfect way to encourage more reading throughout their day! My daughter loves to sit and look at books when she’s feeling angry/frustrated so this is the perfect solution for her!

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Sounds like a great plan, Brittany. And how wonderful that your daughter uses looking at books to help her relieve stress!

Anne

says:

Ours love reading/listening to their books on their beds or on the lounge next to the window. A great reminder to be intentional about creating space to read.

Kelly-Lee

says:

Such a clever way to allow the joy of reading be part of your every day life.

Tiffani Warren

We’re moving into a bigger apartment soon and will have a dedicated homeschool room. I can’t wait to see how my kids make it their own for cozy things like reading; I hadn’t even thought of that!

Tonya Willoughby

These sweet reading books are so special!! Thanks AAR for creating and inspiring our little readers!!

Rin

We’re very into al fresco/plein air reading on blankets under a tree in our back yard. This is our main, but not only, outdoor “nook.” I’m hoping to associate reading with other outdoor joys.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

I love reading outdoors, Rin! The daybed on the patio is my favorite reading nook of the ones featured here.

Allie

says:

We have so many nooks around the house for the kids. They have bunk beds and we invested in some high quality (super bright!) reading lights for them. We allow them to snuggle in the beds at night and read for a while before they go to sleep. Its be huge for their confidence!

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Allie,
When I started letting my kids stay up an extra half hour to an hour if they were in bed reading, the amount of reading they did each day increased beyond that hour! It is a great way to help motivate children to read more.

Andrea

says:

My son created a reading book in his (huge) closet!! It has a 4-ft tall teddy bear that he lays on and he snuggles in to read.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Awww! I would love a 4 foot tall stuffed animal to read with too! What a great idea, Andrea.

Karen Gillette

says:

I have been searching for the perfect little cozy nook for my son. Does anyone know of or have actual diy building plans available for download for some of these ideas?

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

I don’t know of any specific plans, Karen. Sorry. I think the idea is to use what you have to create a comfortable place for reading.

Gillian

says:

We love AAR and AAS. And, we love all the books. Instead of a dedicated book nook due to space confines we use what should be the kitchen dining corner and eat at the island instead.

Jess

says:

These are such great ideas. I plan do create a reading tent for my little ones.

Robin E.

says: Customer Service

Tents and forts are always a hit with kids, Jess!

Melissa A Hansen

says:

I plan to make a corner tent.
