Sail into a Summer of Reading with Flat Ziggy

Flat Ziggy’s Summer Reading Adventure - All About Reading

It’s almost July, and that means school is out for the summer!

Summer is a time for fun. It’s a time for swimming, biking, vacations, picnics—and adventure! But summer shouldn’t be a time to stop reading, and Ziggy is here to help make sure your kids remember to add reading to their summer fun list.

So Who Is Ziggy?

The Zigzag Zebra (affectionately known as Ziggy) is a familiar face to users of our pre-reading program, but for those of you who have never met him, you’ll soon discover that Ziggy is a young zebra who loves to read right alongside young students. He is a supportive friend for beginning readers, and he loves to have a good time as he helps kids learn.

Which is exactly why Ziggy is so excited to join your kids for an exciting reading adventure this summer! Of course, we couldn’t send Ziggy to spend the summer with all of you, so we’re sending Ziggy’s representative instead…meet Flat Ziggy!

Flat Ziggy’s Summer Reading Adventure!

Many of our youngest fans joined Flat Ziggy for a summer of reading last year. Well, Flat Ziggy had so much fun that he begged us to let him have another adventure this summer. He’s especially excited to share his love of sailing with all of his friends!

For the next four weeks, Flat Ziggy would like to join you and your children on a fun adventure. Here are some of the activities your child will be able to enjoy with Flat Ziggy:

Flat Ziggy's Summer Reading Adventure - All About Learning Press
  • Keep an activity checklist. Take Ziggy along on all your summer adventures and check off the fun activities your children and Flat Ziggy share together.
  • Keep a reading log to record all the books your child reads with Flat Ziggy.
  • Take LOTS of pictures! Going on a picnic? Bring Flat Ziggy along and take a picture to share with us. Reading a good book? Read it to Flat Ziggy and take a picture of that, too. Going to Grandma’s lake house? Don’t forget to pack Flat Ziggy! We’d love to see your pictures of Flat Ziggy sunning himself on the beach.
  • Win prizes! At the end of Flat Ziggy’s Reading Adventure, we’ll be awarding prizes to a few of Flat Ziggy’s lucky friends! And the best part? You don’t have to be a good reader or a good photographer to win a prize. Everyone who submits a photo, an activity checklist, or a reading log will be eligible to win one of our great prizes.

Join the Flat Ziggy Adventure!

Joining Flat Ziggy on his summer reading adventure is as easy as 1-2-3. All you have to do is:

  1. Fill out the form.
  2. Download and print your Flat Ziggy Starter Kit.
  3. Start reading!

We did this with my son 2 summer’s ago when we went on a summer trip to Washington DC. He had a blast with it. Then just today he found a ziggy that he had drawn under my husband’s recliner, brought it to me and begged me to find the cut-out Ziggy on the internet again.

Great question! I’ll attach a pack from last year–not sure if you have those or not. We’ve actually had other requests for more clothes, and we plan to create more and hopefully send out an email to Flat Ziggy Fans this fall (probably sometime in October).

Thanks for your interest!

Alison

says:

Should you wait until your child is an avid reader before you introduce spelling?

Merry at AALP

says:

Hi Alison,

Marie recommends completing All About Reading Level 1 first, and then adding in the All About Spelling program. This way students get a solid start in reading first, and have a strong basis for spelling as well. However, occasionally there are times you could start sooner. See our article on the Right Time to Start AAS: http://blog.allaboutlearningpress.com/aas-right-time-to-start/

Alison

says:

As a teacher I recognize the excellence of your program and really want it to work for my child but at the same time I don’t think it’s right to push a child into something he or she doesn’t enjoy. I’ve tried making the reading experience enjoyable in every way I know how and while she loves to read with me she dislikes the drills, flash cards and review sheets. She just turned six and is very smart, should I just focus on reading component for now in hopes she’ll want to start back up?

Merry at AALP

says:

Hi Alison,

I just read your other post and answered there with some ideas and strategies for these components: http://blog.allaboutlearningpress.com/matthew-effect-in-reading/comment-page-1/#comment-96292

I wonder if you are spending too long on the drills and fluency pages for her age–see my other post and see if that gives you some ideas for modifying these when you restart AAR after a break. If you have additional questions, please post again or email me at support@allaboutlearningpress.com. I’d be glad to help!

Todd

Amber

says:

Ann

says:

We’re excited to read with Ziggy!

Renee S.

says:

I like the idea of keeping the child’s interest with flat Ziggy since the puppet Ziggy looks so lovely and wouldn’t want the chance of damage or loss on car trips and such.

Kendra Rippel

says:

Well, that’s a valid point! It’s nice knowing that Flat Ziggy is replaceable to some degree. When I was seven-years old, I was walking across a small bridge at a zoo, and my favorite jungle-themed hat flew off my head and landed in the alligator pit below. I was determined to stage a rescue and go and get it, but my Mom and Dad wouldn’t let me. Best to keep plush Ziggy at home! :)

Chelsea K.

says:

What a great program! Cant wait to get started!

What a fun idea! My kids love Ziggy and will have so much fun taking flat Ziggy along with us this summer. However, I have a feeling they may feel the need to bring puppet Ziggy along too. :)

Marie Rippel

says: Customer Service

Needless to say, Flat Ziggy and puppet Ziggy make very good traveling companions! I think your kids will be in very good company. :)

Shannon Harvey

says:

I’m commenting to be entered into the All About Reading giveaway, but whether I win or not, I’m very interested in this curriculum and the All About Spelling for my older children (4th and 7th grader boys). So, thank you!

Adrienne Domino

says:

I have several friends who swear by AAR, but have never tried it. I would like to try it with my pre-schooler. We used a different curriculum with my older children, and they do not like to read. I LOVE to read! I’m hoping AAR will help to instill a love of reading in my next two kiddos!

Marie Rippel

says: Customer Service

Hello to a fellow book lover! Instilling a love of reading is at the forefront of everything we do here. We not only want to teach kids in the ways that they learn best (in a multisensory, Orton Gillingham-inspired fashion), but we want them to have fun while learning, too! Enjoy teaching your kids!

Sara R

says:

I noticed Flat Ziggy mentioned someplace but just glossed over it. I’m glad I read this post because it looks like fun. We’ve never done any “Flat ____” things before and I think my kids are at a good age now to really get into it. Maybe it’ll also be something a little different to motivate us to get up and get going.

Marie Rippel

says: Customer Service

I’m glad that you were able to rediscover Flat Ziggy! I hope that Flat Ziggy ends up being the perfect motivator for your children!

ashley smith

says:

I am so looking forward to trying this program, I’ve been eyeballing it for a year now but have been worried if it would work for us.

Shara

says:

I REALLY need to do this with my son. He’s not interested in reading. :-(

Marie Rippel

I am so happy this is open to Canadians. My daughter sat down and read three books as soon as i printed out the Flat Ziggy sheets and clothes along with the book log. Our teacher used a book log this year so continuing it through the summer (but with a fun buddy – Ziggy) is great!

Samantha

says:

We are just starting the pre-reading program and the minute my little guy caught a glimpse of Ziggy, I had a feeling this program was going to rock! He knows Ziggy is just for learning and if he does want to see him for a little while, that he has to go back to napping on the shelf until the next lesson. It has encouraged his learning so much. So when we discovered the #flatziggy I knew we had to participate. He carries FlatZiggy all around and changes his clothes a million times a day. I laminated it for him so it would last. Looking forward to taking ziggy on all kinds of adventures.

Marie Rippel

says: Customer Service

I loved hearing how you laminated Flat Ziggy to withstand the test of time, Samantha. I hope that you and your son have lots of fulfilling #flatziggy adventures this summer. Perhaps you’ll even see some fireworks together this weekend, or go to a parade. Happy 4th of July!

Nancy S.

says:

My 6 year old just colored him in today. And we read a book about a dragon just a bit ago. Good times :)

Marie Rippel

says: Customer Service

Wahoo! I hope your daughter loves her new sidekick and that they enjoy lots of good reads together. And lots of adventures, too, of course. :)

Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July with Flat Ziggy!

kimberly

says:

What ages is ziggY for? my daughter is late elementary and she might be too old

Kimberly,
There is no age limit, up or down, on the Flat Ziggy Club. The only limit is if the student would enjoy it or not. My 12 year old son is enjoying it, even though I haven’t told my kids about the possibility of prizes because I work for AALP.

He’s taking it up a notch or so, however. For example, we can’t go catch lightning bugs because we live in Arizona and there are no lightning bugs here. So instead, we are playing with LEDs and other electronic components and counting that.

The idea is to have some silly fun, and to read and have little adventures. If your daughter would enjoy it, go for it!

Jamie

says:

I can’t wait to start this program with my little one. We are doing Level 1 with my 6 year old who had eye issues and some dyslexia and it is working wonders. We will finish that this summer and do level’s 2 and and 3. But my 3 year old is anxious to start school with her siblings! =)

Jamie,
Thank you for sharing how well All About Reading is working with your 6 year old. Keep up the great work, both of you!

I hope you and your kids have great fun with Flat Ziggy’s Summer Reading Adventure!

tracy

says:

Love this!!! What a great way to keep the kiddos interested during the summer.

Sarah

says:

So cute! I look forward to using Ziggy!

Deirdre Atkins

says:

That sounds fun!

Judith Martinez

says:

What a fun twist on the flat stanley concept! I may have to print one out.

Melanie Williams

says:

Excited to begin some adventures with Flat Ziggy!!

Michelle

says:

My 6 year-old is so excited to start doing things with Ziggy that he has me frantically cutting out the pieces to go along with him so he can dress him up. However, we both agree that if Ziggy is going to be going on bike rides or boating and participating in other activities near the water, that he needs to be thinking “safety first” and getting himself a helmet and a life jacket. Any chance Ziggy can get a couple of wardrobe additions? He seems to be covered for pretty much all of the other activities on the Reading Adventure Checklist with the exception of those two.

Thanks so much for this great summer reading activity! We are going to really enjoy taking part and it will be a great incentive to get my son to continue practicing his reading skills.

Marie Rippel

says: Customer Service

Hi Michelle! Please tell your son thank you for the suggestions. Our graphic designer was planning to do some wardrobe additions for Ziggy (just because they are so much fun to make!), and we plan to send them to all Flat Ziggy Club members later this summer. I’ll make sure that we include a helmet and life jacket!

Kellie

says:

This is such a fun spin off of Flat Stanley! Can’t wait to do this with my 4 year old!

Kendra Rippel

says:

We hope you have a blast, Kellie! Enjoy your summer reads! :)

Erin Rodriguez

says:

My girls would love this!

Kristen

says:

Hello,
I’ve been getting your emails for awhile now. I have two younger children that I am concerned about when it comes to reading. More so my son. I’ve had him evaluated by a neuropsychologist and she said his “working memory is very low”. But she didn’t think he was dyslexic, yet I feel they missed something. I’m not sure but he certainly has a difficult time when it comes to reading and I see him mixing up his letters when he sounds them out. He gets very exhausted in the process and gets frustrated easily. He’s a very smart kid when you speak to him but I feel there’s a missing part. I feel I’m having to research for myself what should happen, maybe it’s a way for these doctors to make you keep coming back.
Just curious if there was something to help us over the summer?
Thank you!

Hi Kristen,

You might want to look into vision processing issues. Mixing up letters, the frustration and exhaustion could be related to that–try looking at http://www.covd.org for more information. They also have a list of doctors if you decide to pursue an evaluation (this type of vision issue won’t show up on a regular eye exam.)

As far as what to do over the summer, we have had people use our programs over the summer. We recommend short, daily lessons (20 minutes, but you can go a bit less or break it up into shorter sessions according to his needs) so that it’s not too overwhelming for the student. You can use the placement tests to help you decide which level to start with: http://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/reading-placement/

Let me know if you have additional questions, or feel free to email if you want to discuss his issues in more depth. I’d be glad to help.

Also, Marie did a series on Memory issues that I think you would find helpful. Here’s one specifically on Improving Working Memory: http://blog.allaboutlearningpress.com/improving-working-memory/

This will also link to the other articles.

Low working memory makes learning to read so difficult. You have to add in a lot more review until some things are very automatic. Have you seen the blending procedure we recommend? http://allaboutlearningpress.net/go.php?id=708&url=2402

This can be vital for a student who has a low working memory. He can point to each letter and say the sounds, but if he can’t hold all those “pieces” in his mind at one time, they will get mixed up. So the next step of blending just two sounds and holding that piece in mind while he tries to add on the third sound can really help.

How old is he? And, if you say 5 numbers or items (unrelated), can he remember and repeat them back to you, or would he struggle with that? If he’s not to that point yet, he’s probably not quite ready to read yet.

I know it’s hard to figure out what’s going on with kids sometimes and why they struggle. Sometimes you can find help by talking with other homeschoolers in your area–maybe there is a practitioner that would be more helpful than the one you did the initial evaluation with? Hang in there!

Hi! We are so excited about this idea for summer reading. My 3 year old has not put flat ziggy down yet! I am wondering how it works with multiple children.when we send pics will they be entered indevidualy for prizes or as a family? And are there any age requirements? Thankyou for this unique and fun idea.

Every photo entered will be counted as one entry for that week’s drawing! 5 photos means 5 entries! 10 photos means 10 entries! They will also be counted as entries for the grand prize at the end of the summer! There are no age requirements! Have fun!! – Linda at AALP

Hi! I love getting your emails and reading your blog, when I have time :)
I think this would be a great way to keep my daughter up on summer reading and the incentive to win prizes would be a real bonus. Are the prizes only available to residents of the USA? We’re in Canada.

I just signed my family up for Flat Ziggy, and am trying to download the materials needed. Ziggy and the reading log downloaded just fine, but the checklist link keeps downloading the reading list again. I think the link may be wrong? Thanks!
