With this week’s ABC Craft, learning the letter P will make your child feel as plucky as a parrot! But don’t ruffle his feathers—you’ll want to use only the most beautiful colors for this flashy bird.
Here’s What You’ll Need
2 sheets of printer paper
Card stock (we used red, orange, yellow, lime green, light blue, and dark blue)
Trace the letter P and the parrot’s tail feathers, beak, and eye feather onto card stock.
Cut out the letter P and the parrot’s body parts.
Glue the letter P to a full sheet of card stock (we used light blue, but you can use any color you like).
Tucking them under the edge of the letter P, glue the tail feathers and beak onto the parrot.
Attach the eye feather to the letter P, just above the beak.
Affix one googly eye to the eye feather.
Learning with Your Letter P Craft
As you and your child assemble your P Is for Parrot Craft, practice saying /p/–/p/–parrot together. You can find more tips for working on pre-reading skills with your preschooler in this handy download.

Just wanted to send a big thanks for these letter crafts. We have a mom-led neighborhood preschool and I emailed the link for these crafts to the other moms so we can use one each week with our kiddos. They are so fun and cute!
P is for Parrot is one of my favorites. I like how this one uses so many different colors especially if your teaching a younger kiddo. It reinforces his/her knowledge of colors. If child is more on target (age-wise), another way to incorporate the colors would be to talk about mixing them and what color each would make.
The child is looking so cute while making this cools parrots craft. After this, I also give this work to my child’s as well. Thanks for sharing such a nice activity with children.
Natasha,
I recommend gathering the materials to prep many, if not all of these, at once and then putting on an old favorite movie to watch while getting these ready for your kids to enjoy. I find doing a bunch of preparation work at once makes me more likely to get to things like this.
Nicole,
I did the same with similar ABC crafts when my children were little. They loved the binder books they made themselves and looked through them occasionally for years! Now that they are much older, I have their ABC books stashed away as keepsakes to bring out when they are graduated. :D
I really love this project. I am having all my Pre-K and K students complete 1-2 letters per week and they keep them in their own Alphabet Notebook. We put each completed letter in a plastic sleeve and then insert them in their notebooks. They can use a dry erase marker to practice tracing over their letters.
Beth,
What a great idea to put the finished pages in sleeves and then they can trace the letter with a dry erase marker! Such a clever idea; thank you for sharing it.
I love all about learning press website and their blogs a lot… I’m a mother of two children so I felt too difficult to teach phonics for them. God blessed me to see your website..I love your ideas and explanation methods. “What a wonderful methods to teach letters & phonics. Keep rocking always!!!!
