Playing “Silly Sentence Match-Ups”

Are you ready? This could get a bit silly!

Silly Match-Ups game cards scattered on table

Select the animal and place cards you want to review with your child. The animals cards are marked with a paw print on the back and the place cards are marked with a compass rose. You’ll notice that the paw print and compass rose symbols are color-coded for each level. Shuffle and place the cards face down in two piles, one for animals and one for places.

Stack of game cards in a pile

Have your child draw one card from each pile.

Now let him read the resulting silly sentence.

A completed silly match-up sentence

Continue playing until your child has successfully read all the silly sentences. For more practice (and more fun!), shuffle the cards and play again!

Try “Silly Sentence Match-Ups” Game Options

  • To play with multiple children, create draw piles for each child.
  • To play with children who are in different levels, include animal and place cards from each child’s current level and lesson.

I have finished homeschooling my three children. Now I am in on-line college trying to get an associates degree in early childhood education. This looks like so much fun. I spent the last 23 years looking for and playing educational games with my children. Now I have another game to play with the little ones I will be helping. Thank you

The animals are not “on” the objects, they are “with” the objects. I was trained never to teach something that you will ultimately need to unteach, like “You can’t take 5 from 3.” You can and wind up with a negative number.

That’s what makes them silly sentences! A goldfish literally ON a pancake–ew! Or an elephant literally ON a cookie–would he smash it?! Have fun reading with your students!
