The Story Behind the Story – “Pigs in the Kitchen”

The Story Behind the Story – “Pigs in the Kitchen” - All About Reading

Have you ever noticed that some dogs look like their owners?

The mere suggestion of this possibility opened the floodgates for us here at All About Learning Press.

While pondering the question, I jokingly asked, “If dogs look like their owners, could it also be true that book characters resemble their creators?”

Well, one day my staff decided to put the theory to the test. I wasn’t quite sure what to think about it, but they used a Venn diagram to compare me with Warren Pig, the main character in one of the decodable stories from All About Reading Level 4. (If you haven’t met Warren yet, you can read about him in “Pigs in the Kitchen”.)

So…what’s the verdict? How much do Warren and I have in common? Here’s what my staff discovered:

Well, Warren and I certainly do have some interesting things in common, but we have some big differences too!

Now, It’s Your Turn

Does your child have anything in common with Warren Pig? Will you help satisfy my curiosity? Here’s what you can do:

  1. Download and read “Pigs in the Kitchen” (Download the decodable story from All About Reading Level 4).
  2. Print out the Venn diagram worksheet. Use the Venn diagram in the worksheet to help your child explore how he and Warren are similar and how they are different.

I love the beautiful story books in the AAR programs! Extras on the blog, such as these bonus stories and printables, and personal drawings on packages make this program exceptional! I am thankful to have found this program, the thought of teaching reading was completely overwhelming without it.

I don’t know what we have in common with Warren, but I just wanted to say we LOVE your readers. We are doing AAR level 1, and I have found the stories so engaging, funny, and downright witty. It’s hard to even choose a favorite. The only thing I could improve in them is to make them in color.
